Somalia Hosts Inaugural Cohort of Sudanese Scholarship Beneficiaries

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Education, Culture, and Higher Education led a welcoming ceremony for Sudanese students. They form the initial group under a new Somali government-funded scholarship program for Sudanese students interested in pursuing higher studies at the Somali National University (SNU).

This effort signifies a pivotal step in relations between the two countries, reversing traditional roles in their longstanding partnership. Sudan long served as a key hub for Somali students during the nation’s hardest times. Now, Somalia extends similar support to Sudanese youth, allowing their education to proceed amid homeland challenges.

At the event, the minister highlighted the profound historical and fraternal ties with Sudan cherished by Somalia’s government and people. He described Sudan’s earlier assistance as an “unforgettable debt of gratitude” that shapes their shared bond. Through these scholarships, Somalia honors that legacy while nurturing Sudan’s emerging leaders.

The students will join multiple faculties at SNU, which is Somalia’s top public institution. The Ministry of Education stated that this is only the first intake. More groups of Sudanese students are set to reach Mogadishu in the weeks ahead, reinforcing cooperation between the sister nations.

The initiative demonstrates Somalia’s expanding role in fostering regional stability and progress via soft power and educational outreach.
