In March, the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) conducted an After Action Review of its La Niña allocation to evaluate its effectiveness in achieving core humanitarian objectives and to gather feedback on the fund’s performance as a financing tool. The SHF allocation supported Health, Nutrition, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions in the districts of Afmadow, Diinsoor, and Wanla Weyn.
To facilitate learning and transparency, Somalia’s Humanitarian Financing Unit, of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), convened an informal dialogue with implementing partners to review the outcomes of SHF’s third Reserve Allocation. Participants discussed challenges, shared best practices, and identified improvements for future allocations. Partners reported that the funding enabled timely, effective, and dignified humanitarian action in anticipation of potential drought conditions linked to the La Niña weather pattern, which threatened 16 high-risk areas.
This SHF allocation was further bolstered in December by an additional $5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). The CERF funding targeted Afmadow, Diinsoor, Baidoa, Qansax Dheere, and Xudur with lifesaving WASH, Protection, and Food Security/Livelihoods interventions, aimed at reducing displacement risks and addressing critical protection needs.
