Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Hayir Maareeye, held a high-level meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, to deepen cooperation between Somalia and the regional bloc.
The discussions focused on enhancing joint efforts in agricultural development, climate resilience, food security, and regional integration. Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action to address recurring droughts, environmental degradation, and food system disruptions that continue to impact millions across the Horn of Africa.
Maareeye reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to working closely with IGAD to implement regional programs that align with Somalia’s national development priorities. He also welcomed IGAD’s technical and institutional support for advancing Somalia’s agricultural transformation agenda.
Dr. Workneh expressed IGAD’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with Somalia, noting that sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation are critical pillars for long-term peace and stability in the region.
This meeting marks a significant step toward fostering stronger multilateral collaboration to address shared challenges in the IGAD region, where Somalia remains a key member state with growing influence.
