Somalia, INTERPOL Deepen Cooperation to Tackle Transnational Crime

Mogadishu, Somalia – In a significant push to enhance Somalia’s internal security and international law enforcement collaboration, the Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, held high-level talks with senior INTERPOL officials on Sunday.

The meeting focused on strengthening joint efforts to combat transnational organized crime, terrorism, and illicit trafficking, as Somalia steps up its role in regional and global security frameworks. The engagement comes at a critical time, with increased cross-border criminal activity threatening stability in the Horn of Africa.

Fartaag emphasized Somalia’s commitment to improving data-sharing, operational coordination, and capacity-building through INTERPOL’s global policing tools. He welcomed technical support to modernize Somalia’s policing infrastructure, enhance biometric systems, and strengthen border security management.

Senior INTERPOL officials commended Somalia’s recent security gains and pledged continued support to advance criminal investigations, digital forensics, and cross-border intelligence exchange. They also discussed expanding Somalia’s access to INTERPOL databases to aid in the identification and apprehension of fugitives and suspects moving across borders.

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to fast-track the development of joint action plans, training programs, and regional partnerships to address shared threats. The engagement marks a major milestone in Somalia’s broader security sector reform and its reintegration into international law enforcement networks.
