The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has invited Kenya to government-to-government talks over the standoff on miraa trade.
In April, the government of Somalia imposed a ban on all forms of miraa trade, including its consumption to curb the spread of the deadly COVID-19.
Early August, the government lifted the ban on international flights, which it had announced as part of other COVID-19 restrictions.
However, despite the recent Somalia government’s lifting of some of the restrictions, miraa remains a banned substance in the country.
Miraa traders from both Kenya and Somalia have raised serious complaints on the ban.
Now, authorities in Mogadishu have asked their counterparts from Nairobi to meet and discuss about this trade.
Recently, a Kenyan delegation comprising officials from the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) visited Mogadishu only to be snubbed.
Anne Nyagah, the Chief Administrative Secretary at Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would handle the stalemate through its Department of External Relations and Trade.
