Somalia Joins 48th Arabsat Meeting, Boosts Role in Arab Space Innovation

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Somalia’s Ministry of Communications and Technology has officially participated in the 48th meeting of the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat), marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s commitment to advancing Arab space technology and strengthening regional cooperation in the digital and aerospace sectors.

The high-level meeting, held in Riyadh, brought together representatives from Arab League member states, leading space and telecommunications experts, and Arabsat stakeholders to discuss ongoing initiatives, future satellite launches, and strategies for enhancing Arab technological self-reliance in space communications.

A delegation from the Ministry of Communications and Technology represented Somalia and engaged in discussions around satellite policy, technological innovation, and regional digital transformation.

The Somali team emphasized the country’s interest in expanding its space and satellite communication capabilities, particularly in the fields of digital infrastructure, broadcasting, and internet connectivity for underserved regions.

Somalia’s involvement in Arabsat comes at a time when the country is rapidly digitizing its public sector and expanding ICT access to boost socio-economic development.

Engaging with Arabsat is expected to support Somalia’s goals of improving satellite coverage, enhancing emergency response systems, and accelerating its national digital agenda.

Founded in 1976, Arabsat is one of the world’s top satellite operators and the leading satellite service provider in the Arab region.

The organization’s mission is to deliver reliable telecommunication, broadcasting, and internet services to Arab countries while advancing regional space ambitions.

As Somalia strengthens its presence in multilateral forums like Arabsat, it signals a strategic shift towards embracing technology-driven development and deeper participation in Arab innovation ecosystems.
