MOGADISHU — In a monumental diplomatic milestone, the Federal Republic of Somalia has officially secured a highly coveted position on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC). This historic development marks the first time the nation has held a seat on the continent’s most powerful security organ since 2003.

A Two-Year Strategic Mandate
Having officially secured its place on the 15-member council in February 2026, the Federal Government of Somalia will hold the strategic position for a critical two-year period. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this election serves as a powerful demonstration of the rapidly increasing trust among African nations regarding Somalia’s capacity to actively contribute to promoting peace, security, and conflict resolution across the region.
This continental achievement directly parallels Mogadishu’s wider global diplomatic resurgence, coming closely on the heels of Somalia’s successful campaign to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term.

To formalize the transition, Abdullahi Warfaa, Somalia’s officially appointed Ambassador to Ethiopia and the Permanent Representative to the African Union, officially hoisted the Somali flag at the AUPSC headquarters in Addis Ababa. The ceremonial raising symbolizes the nation’s formal assumption of its new, heavy obligations to the continent’s collective security framework.
Ambassador Warfaa has been heavily involved in facilitating Somalia’s reintegration into continental leadership bodies, a process that accelerated following his formal presentation of credentials to the African Union Commission and his subsequent lobbying efforts.
Elevating Somalia’s Global Position
Senior government representatives in Mogadishu have widely characterized the AUPSC election as a groundbreaking achievement. It fundamentally elevates Somalia’s global diplomatic position, transforming the nation from a primary consumer of international security assistance into an active, strategic architect of continental peacebuilding.
By leveraging its own hard-won domestic experiences in state-building and counter-terrorism, Somalia aims to enhance collaboration and stability throughout the African continent, fulfilling the strategic roadmap recently laid out when the Somali delegation presented its comprehensive vision for regional stability at the latest African Union Summit.
