Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially inaugurated Somalia’s 2025/26 academic year in Mogadishu today, marking the start of a new school cycle with a strong emphasis on teacher development and examination integrity.
The launch coincided with the conclusion of a nationwide teacher training program that equipped 300 educators with updated teaching skills and modern classroom approaches. The initiative is part of the government’s broader education reform plan, which aims to raise the quality of learning and standardize teaching practices across the country.
In his address, President Mohamud praised the dedication of teachers who continue to serve under challenging conditions. He underscored that the success of Somalia’s education system depends on empowering teachers with the knowledge and tools to nurture future generations.
The ceremony also recognized the staff who managed the 2024/25 national examinations, highlighting their role in ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability in the assessment process. Education officials described the exams as a milestone, citing improvements in organization and wider participation of students nationwide.
The dual event—launching the new school year and honoring the contributions of educators—reflects the government’s stated commitment to building a resilient education sector despite ongoing security and resource challenges.
Authorities say plans are underway to expand teacher training programs to reach more regions, while also improving examination systems to meet international standards.
With classrooms across Somalia reopening this week, parents and students expressed optimism that reforms will strengthen access to quality education and help secure a brighter future for the country’s youth.
