Somalia Launches E-Visa System in Landmark Move

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Somalia has officially launched the country’s first-ever electronic visa (E-VISA) platform, a milestone that places Somalia among nations adopting modern, digitalized entry systems.

The new service, accessible via the official website evisa.gov.so, enables travelers to apply for visas online without visiting Somali embassies or consulates. Authorities say the system is designed to simplify travel procedures, enhance transparency, and strengthen border management.

“This marks a historic transformation in how Somalia manages entry requirements. The E-VISA will not only facilitate the movement of people but also boost tourism, trade, and international partnerships,” read a statement from the agency.

The rollout comes at a time when Somalia is working to modernize its governance structures, streamline services, and project a more business-friendly image to the world.

Officials believe the system will help attract foreign investors, ease travel for humanitarian and development workers, and encourage members of the Somali diaspora to reconnect with their homeland.

Travelers can now submit applications, upload documents, and make payments directly through the secure online portal. Once approved, visas will be issued electronically, reducing processing delays and cutting the risks associated with counterfeit documents.

The launch of the E-VISA is part of a broader digital reform agenda by the Somali government, which has prioritized innovation and technology to enhance public services and support economic recovery.

With this step, Somalia joins a growing number of African countries leveraging technology to facilitate global mobility and strengthen security in an increasingly interconnected world.
