Somalia Launches Evaluation Society to Strengthen Accountability and Development Planning

Mogadishu, Somalia — On Thursday, the Ministry of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development hosted a landmark meeting in Mogadishu to inaugurate the Interim Executive Committee of the Somalia Evaluation Society (SOMES). The initiative marks a defining step toward institutionalizing evidence-based decision-making and enhancing public accountability across government programs.

The newly formed committee is tasked with laying the groundwork for SOMES — a professional body that will unite evaluators, policymakers, researchers, and development partners under a shared mission of improving the quality and impact of Somalia’s national development agenda.

Officials at the meeting described the formation of SOMES as a timely and necessary reform that will help Somalia measure progress more accurately and ensure that public resources are used effectively.

The ministry emphasized that the Evaluation Society will play a vital role in advancing the goals of the National Development Plan, enabling policymakers to make informed choices grounded in credible evidence. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to make SOMES a cornerstone of Somalia’s future governance and development planning.
