Somalia Launches Global Bid to Introduce Biometric E-Passport

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has officially opened an international tender to modernize its national passport system, marking a major push toward digital security and global mobility.

The Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) announced that it is seeking qualified global firms to design and supply a new polycarbonate e-passport equipped with biometric features. The initiative aims to replace the existing paper-based document with a more secure and durable format widely recognized in international travel systems.

The upgrade is expected to reduce forgery risks, streamline verification processes and align Somalia with international aviation and border control standards. Authorities believe the transition will not only enhance national security but also improve the experience of Somali travelers at foreign entry points, where concerns over document authenticity have often led to additional scrutiny.

The agency has emphasized transparency in the bidding process and is encouraging submissions from companies with proven experience in biometric identity technologies. The rollout plan is anticipated to include distribution centers across Somalia and consular services for citizens abroad.

The introduction of a polycarbonate e-passport is seen as a strategic step toward reinforcing state institutions and restoring confidence in national documentation. For many citizens, the announcement signals a move toward greater global access and administrative modernization.
