Mogadishu, Somalia — In a milestone moment for Somalia’s education sector, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education has launched a pioneering Higher Education Scholarship Program designed exclusively for Somali women. The initiative, inaugurated by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, marks a bold step toward strengthening women’s leadership and academic participation in the country.
The program will provide 150 fully funded Master’s scholarships at the Somali National University, implemented in collaboration with several regional universities. It seeks to create new pathways for talented women to pursue advanced degrees, particularly in fields where female representation remains limited.
For many young Somali women, access to postgraduate education has long been hindered by financial barriers and limited opportunities. This initiative aims to change that narrative—opening doors for women to contribute meaningfully to public service, academia, and private sector leadership.
The program also reflects the government’s broader vision of building an inclusive education system that empowers all citizens. By investing in women’s education, the ministry hopes to nurture a generation of skilled professionals whose expertise can drive national development and social transformation.
The scholarships cover tuition, research expenses, and living stipends, ensuring that beneficiaries can focus fully on their studies. The selection process will prioritize academic merit, leadership potential, and commitment to community impact.
This new chapter for Somali women in higher education underscores a growing recognition that national progress depends on equal opportunity. As the first cohort prepares to begin their studies, their journey stands as a testament to the resilience, ambition, and promise of Somali women shaping the nation’s future.
