NEW YORK — Somalia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations organized a prestigious diplomatic reception in New York to celebrate the successful conclusion of its presidency of the UN Security Council.
The event gathered ambassadors, senior envoys, and UN officials for a formal closing ceremony, marking the end of Somalia’s historic month-long leadership—a position the country resumed after a 54-year hiatus.
Symbol of Recovery
In his keynote address to the diplomatic corps, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman “Baalle”, emphasized the significance of the achievement. He characterized the presidency as a strong symbol of the nation’s institutional recovery and its progress toward stability.
“Heading the world’s primary security organization demonstrates the advancement Somalia has made in reestablishing its legitimate position in the international community,” Ambassador Osman stated.
Commitment to Multilateralism
Ambassador Osman stressed that Somalia’s tenure on the Council was grounded in a commitment to strengthening the rule of law and promoting international cooperation. He maintained that these principles are vital in the current geopolitical environment, reaffirming that Mogadishu remains dedicated to multilateralism as the most effective approach for resolving conflicts.
Cultural Diplomacy
Shifting focus to national identity, the Ambassador praised the resilience and industriousness of the Somali people. He noted that the country has consistently addressed challenges with unity and concrete action.
The gala concluded with a showcase of cultural diplomacy, featuring celebrated Somali artists who presented traditional music and dances. The performances provided international attendees with a window into the nation’s heritage, enhancing cultural connections as the diplomatic month drew to a close.
