It appears that a Somali candidate who was vying for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) did not make it to the final list of candidates.
This can happen for various reasons, such as not securing enough support from other member states, not meeting certain eligibility criteria, or strategic decisions by the Somali government or the AU’s electoral committee.
Missing out on the final list can be a significant setback, but it also reflects the highly competitive nature of such high-profile positions within the AU.
The final list of candidates is an all-male cast that includes Kenya’s Raila Odinga and Mahmoud Ali Youssou of Djibouti.
Others are Richard James Randriamandrato and Anil Kumarsingh Gayan of Madagascar and Mauritius respectively.
All the four have submitted their CVs.
The task of vetting them to determine their suitability for the AUC chairmanship now falls on the hands of a panel of experts.
Fawzia Yusuf Adam had been Somalia’s candidate for the elections due in February 2025.
