Somalia Mourns UNSOS Chief

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has extended his deepest condolences following the death of Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, the Head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

In a statement released Tuesday, President Mohamud praised Dr. Kacyira’s unwavering commitment and leadership, describing her as a pivotal figure in advancing Somalia’s stability and development.

“Dr. Kacyira’s steadfast leadership and dedication made a lasting contribution to Somalia’s stability and prosperity. Her tireless work and compassion will be remembered with gratitude,” the President said.

The President conveyed heartfelt sympathies to Dr. Kacyira’s family, as well as to the people and Government of Rwanda, her home country.

Dr. Kacyira, a Rwandan national and former mayor of Kigali, had led UNSOS since 2021, overseeing logistical and operational support to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and other UN agencies. Her tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen operational efficiency, support Somali security forces, and enhance humanitarian assistance delivery.

The United Nations is expected to release further details on memorial arrangements and the continuation of UNSOS leadership responsibilities.
