NAIROBI — The Federal Government of Somalia has significantly broadened access to national identification services for its diaspora by officially launching a National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) office at its embassy in Nairobi, Kenya.
Expanding Civil Registration for the Diaspora
The new facility was formally inaugurated by Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabriil Ibrahim Abdulle, alongside NIRA Director General Abdiweli Ali Abdulle. The opening ceremony, attended by various diplomats and senior government officials, marks a significant milestone as the Nairobi embassy becomes the 30th NIRA center established worldwide.
According to NIRA officials, the new office provides Somali nationals residing in Kenya with direct access to essential documentation. Citizens can now easily register for and receive their national identity cards directly from the embassy, resolving a persistent service gap and completely eliminating the costly need to return to their homeland for identification services.
Supporting Governance and Mobility
This administrative expansion is designed to reinforce civil registration, significantly enhance public service delivery, and fundamentally support Somalia’s broader governance reforms—which crucially include ongoing preparations for universal suffrage.
The development notably occurs amid renewed cross-border engagement and economic cooperation between Kenya and Somalia. With Kenyan President William Ruto recently supervising the reopening of key border points in northeastern Kenya to facilitate bilateral movement and trade, improved access to official Somali identification is anticipated to play a crucial role in properly managing mobility and seamlessly integrating citizens into formal administrative systems.
Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle highlighted that this initiative clearly reflects the federal government’s steadfast commitment to modernizing its national institutions, extending its administrative reach, and fostering stronger, more inclusive connections with the Somali diaspora.
