Somalia Participates in Arab Equality Forum and UNESCWA Meeting

The Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of Somalia, Yusuf Mohamed Adan, took part in the 4th Arab Forum for Equality and the 16th session of the Social Development Committee organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) in Algiers, Algeria.

The high-level meetings, which brought together ministers and senior officials from across the Arab region, focused on addressing the persistent challenges of inequality, strengthening inclusive social protection systems, and enhancing regional cooperation amid ongoing global and regional crises—including economic instability, conflict, and climate change.

Adan emphasized Somalia’s commitment to social justice and inclusive development, highlighting recent reforms aimed at expanding access to essential services and employment opportunities for vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and internally displaced persons (IDPs). He also outlined the Somali government’s efforts to build a comprehensive social protection policy in line with Vision 2060 and the national development agenda.

Participants in the forum reviewed regional progress and exchanged best practices in reducing income gaps, advancing gender equality, and safeguarding human rights. UNESCWA officials called for coordinated policy action, increased investment in human capital, and the establishment of robust social protection mechanisms to reduce disparities and promote sustainable development.

The event concluded with a renewed call for Arab countries to work together in tackling social inequalities and building resilient societies through inclusive policymaking and regional solidarity.
