Somalia Planning to Officially Declare Famine in November

Somalia has announced plans to declare famine in the country officially in November 2022.

Over the last four years, the East African nation has repeatedly suffered drought due to failed rainfalls.

Humanitarian organizations in the country have previously warned of impending famine.

Abby Maxman, the President of Oxfam America, said that there have been early warning signs and mechanisms for quite some time.

Close to 7 million people in Somalia will face high levels of acute food insecurity from October to December.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the Somali government will announce the famine in conjunction with the United Nations.
