TANGIER, Morocco – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre extended his official visit to Morocco with a key tour of Tanger Med Port, now Africa’s biggest and the Mediterranean’s leading facility.
Joined by a senior delegation, PM Barre reviewed the operations of this major logistics center, a crucial link for trade routes spanning Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Its role is highlighted by managing more than 20% of worldwide commercial shipping, making it a pillar of global trade.
In the tour, the Prime Minister met with Tanger Med Port CEO Mehdi Tazi Riffi. Talks focused on deepening port collaboration between Somalia and Morocco, easing trade flows, and exchanging knowledge on infrastructure growth. The leaders considered ways for Somalia to draw on Morocco’s expertise in advanced maritime logistics to enhance its economic setup.
PM Barre stressed that the visit supports his administration’s focus on updating Somalia’s economic base.
“This interaction fits the DanQaran government’s wide-ranging plan to develop vital infrastructure fueling national economic expansion and to strengthen ties between Somalia and Morocco,” he remarked.
The trip occurs as Somalia’s maritime industry sees notable advances. Mogadishu and Berbera ports have gained recent global acclaim for upgrades. The Federal Government leads efforts to update current ports and plans new large-scale facilities to better connect Somalia to international trade.
