Somalia Presides Over UN Security Council After 54 Years, Emphasizes Commitment to Rule of Law

NEW YORK — The Federal Republic of Somalia achieved a historic diplomatic milestone at the United Nations this week, presiding over the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the first time in more than five decades.

Somalia, represented by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Osman Baale, chaired the Security Council during its High-Level (HL) signature event centered on the rule of law.

A Return to the Global Stage

This presidency marks the first time Somalia has led the Council since 1972. The high-level meeting convened senior officials and diplomats to deliberate on the significance of upholding international law, enhancing multilateralism, and ensuring accountability among nations in tackling global challenges.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Permanent Mission of Somalia underscored the broader importance of the moment:

“For the advancement of all peoples & future generations, we must invigorate the UN Charter—aligning actions with words and reaffirming our commitment to the rule of law among nations.”

Renewed Engagement

Observers view this leadership role as a strong indicator of Somalia’s re-emergence as an active member of the global community. The session highlighted the nation’s ongoing endeavors to contribute to international peace, security, and governance, promoting a rules-based international order grounded in the UN Charter.
