Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has launched an investigation into reports of forced voter registration in the country, according to the commission’s chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan.
Speaking to the media, Hassan emphasized that the inquiry is ongoing and reassured the public that the commission strictly opposes coercion in the registration process. “We do not allow anyone to be coerced into registering,” he stated.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns from citizens and civil society groups over alleged pressure tactics being used during the voter registration drive, a critical phase in Somalia’s electoral preparation.
While no specific regions or groups were named, the NIEBC said it is taking the matter seriously and urged anyone with evidence or complaints to come forward. The commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring a free and fair electoral process.
The timeline for completing the investigation has not been disclosed.
