Djibouti’s continued quest for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council has received support from Somalia.
This takes place in the face of Somalia’s unresolved tussle with Kenya over many issues, which include the Gedo impasse.
In June 2020, Kenya will be up against Djibouti in New York to grab that seat. So far, Kenya enjoys backing from the African Union.
The decision by Mogadishu to support Djibouti’s bid comes as a slap in Kenya’s face. It is the culmination of the claims by Somalia of Nairobi’s interference in its internal affairs.
On Monday, the situation worsened when fighting broke out along the Kenya-Somali border. Somalia accused her neighbor of aiding troops loyal to Jubaland State’s Abdirashid Janan.
Mr. Abdinur Mohamed, the Director of Communication at Villa Somalia, said, “Somalia extends unconditional backing to Djibouti as it bids for a non-permanent seat at UN Security Council.”
