Somalia Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Security at UNSC

At today’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on maritime security, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abukar Osman, reiterated the country’s strong commitment to ensuring safe, lawful, and cooperative seas.

Ambassador Osman emphasized the need for robust global partnerships and increased capacity-building for coastal states. He also called for urgent international action to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which continues to threaten marine ecosystems and local livelihoods.

“We call for stronger global partnerships, capacity-building for coastal states, action against IUU fishing, and support for Africa’s Blue Economy,” said the ambassador, highlighting Somalia’s support for sustainable development through maritime cooperation.

The statement reflects Somalia’s growing role in international maritime governance and its strategic focus on harnessing the economic potential of its vast coastline, one of the longest in Africa.
