Nairobi, Kenya – Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, represented the country at a high-level IGAD ministerial meeting in Nairobi. The summit reviewed progress and next steps for implementing the Nairobi Declaration on lasting solutions for Somali refugees and returnee reintegration.
In his address, Hosh offered a thorough update on Somalia’s humanitarian conditions. He described difficulties from internal displacements, refugee reintegration, and climate-driven droughts impacting vulnerable groups.
Despite these obstacles, the minister emphasized resilience and policy advances.
“Challenges remain, but Somalia stays fully dedicated to the Nairobi Declaration’s principles and aims. In recent years, we have steadily converted these commitments into practical measures that better the lives of refugees, displaced people, returnees, and host communities,” Hosh declared.
The minister cited major legislative steps as evidence of the Federal Government’s resolve to shield displaced populations. He referenced the September 2023 ratification of the Refugee and Asylum Seekers Act and the recent approval of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Bill this month. These measures seek to synchronize Somalia’s systems with international and regional benchmarks, delivering rights-oriented safeguards and assistance.
The Nairobi gathering united ministers from the IGAD region to devise shared strategies on displacement, with Somalia leading efforts for sustainable, enduring solutions beyond short-term aid.
