Somalia Reaffirms UN Commitment at 80th General Assembly

New York, US – Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama has reiterated Mogadishu’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter as the country assumes its role as a member of the UN Security Council.

Speaking in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Jama underscored Somalia’s determination to actively contribute to global peace, stability, and cooperation. He emphasized that Somalia’s presence on the Security Council reflects both the trust of the international community and the nation’s growing responsibility in shaping collective action on pressing global challenges.

“As a member of the Security Council, Somalia stands firm in its dedication to upholding the UN Charter and advancing global cooperation,” Jama stated, highlighting Somalia’s evolving role as a constructive voice in multilateral diplomacy.

The landmark 80th UN General Assembly opened Monday under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights.” Leaders from across the world are gathered in New York to deliberate on key global issues, including security crises, climate change, sustainable development, and human rights protection.

For Somalia, participation in the Assembly is not only about reinforcing its international obligations but also an opportunity to showcase its own progress in governance, economic reforms, and security sector stabilization. Officials note that Mogadishu’s growing role at the UN comes at a time when the country is consolidating state-building gains and seeking deeper partnerships with global actors.

The General Assembly’s anniversary theme underscores the UN’s eight-decade legacy and looks ahead to strengthening multilateralism in an era of rising global tensions. Somalia, by aligning itself with this vision, signals its readiness to be an active partner in safeguarding international peace and promoting shared development goals.
