Somalia Receives $20 Million from USAID to Fight COVID-19

Somalia received a donation of US$20 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to help the country’s efforts at fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

The East African nation is currently in the middle of a fresh wave of the COVID-19 pandemic that has claimed hundreds of lives.

Somalia’s Ministry of Health reports new cases every day.

USAID’s contribution has been forwarded to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Somalia.

Consequently, USAID’s financial contributions to UNICEF Somalia have now gone beyond $34.7 million.

Colleen Crenwelge, US Charge d’Affaires, said that the contribution is part of USAID’s continued commitment to supporting Somali children.

She said that the funds would go towards reducing the adverse effects of the deadly disease. Other than that, the funds would strengthen emergency child protection and health.
