Somalia Receives $3.9 Million from the UK for its Security Forces

The United Kingdom has announced an additional $3.9 million (£3 million) contribution to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) Trust Fund, reinforcing its commitment to Somalia’s security transition. This latest donation brings the UK’s total support to the Trust Fund since 2021 to over $50 million, underscoring its role as a key ally in Somalia’s fight against extremism and its path toward stability.

The UNSOS Trust Fund currently sustains 18,900 personnel from the Somali National Army and Somali Police Force. In 2024, British support enabled UNSOS to deliver 6,000 tons of food rations, 2,000 tons of diesel fuel, and casualty evacuations (casevac) for hundreds of wounded Somali Security Forces (SSF) personnel.

The latest donation will ensure continued logistical support, including life-saving medical evacuations, which remain crucial amid ongoing military operations. UNSOS requires at least $2 million per month to expand its support from 18,900 to 20,900 personnel, as mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 2767 (2024). However, current funding levels fall short, raising concerns about the sustainability of critical services.

British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, emphasized the UK’s commitment, stating: “The UK is a firm friend of Somalia, and at this vital moment, I’m proud to announce further funding to support the fight against violent extremists. I encourage other partners to contribute to ensure a safe and secure future for all Somalis.”

Somalia’s National Security Advisor, Hussein Sheikh Ali, echoed the call for more aid while assuring transparency: “The logistical support from UNSOS has been vital, particularly in medical evacuations. We urge donors to increase funding in 2025 as Somalia generates new forces. The government remains committed to accountability and international standards.”

Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, Head of UNSOS, thanked the UK, saying: “Casevac operations have saved lives and boosted morale. A reliable Trust Fund is essential—we urge more partners to step up.”

This contribution reaffirms the UK’s commitment to achieving a secure and stable Somalia. Since 2022, the UK has provided over £28 million in voluntary contributions to UNSOS in support of the SSF Trust Fund.
