Somalia Records High Prevalence of Psychological Disorders

Somalia has recorded a high prevalence of psychological disorders.

United Nations conducted a joint study with the Ministry of Health and Somali national university on the issue.

A report from the joint study indicates that 77 percent of the country’s population suffers from mental disorders.

Further, the increase from the 40 percent that the World Health Organization (WHO) previously reported is a major cause of concern.

Substance abuse disorders have also risen sharply (53.3 percent) in the East African nation.

The recent study by the three organizations took place from October 25-November 15, 2021.

Unfortunately, the largest demographic (68.1 percent) that suffers from these disorders is aged below 35 years.

Males comprised 58.5 percent of the participants.

The study determined that a large percentage of the people experiencing the disorders are those who went through conflicts and droughts.
