Somalia Rejects Ethiopia Airlines’ Request for Extension to Stop Mentioning Somaliland

The Somali government has rejected Ethiopian Airlines’ request for a two-day extension to resolve the issue of removing references to “Somaliland” from its operations.

This week, Somalia issued an ultimatum to Ethiopia Airlines and Fly Dubai to stop refering to Somaliland in its operations or advertisements.

Ethiopia Airlines then requested for a 2-day extension to align its operations to this new requirement.

However, the government has made it clear that if the matter is not promptly addressed, it will be forced to suspend the airline’s operations within Somalia.

The dispute arises from the sensitivity surrounding Somaliland, a region in Somalia that declared independence in 1991 but is not internationally recognized.

Somalia’s firm stance on this issue underscores its commitment to maintaining its territorial integrity.
