Mogadishu, Somalia – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Liberia have secured non-permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term following elections held at the UN General Assembly.
The development comes as Somalia, along with Sierra Leone and Algeria, continues its current role as a non-permanent member for the 2024–2025 term, representing the African continent in the powerful decision-making body.
Somalia’s presence on the Council marks a significant moment in its diplomatic history, as the country plays an active role in shaping global peace and security efforts while navigating its own internal security challenges.
Observers say the election of DRC and Liberia demonstrates continued African engagement and representation in global governance. Somalia is expected to use its remaining time on the Council to advocate for issues affecting the Horn of Africa and broader African peace and development priorities.
