Somalia Resumes Diplomatic Relations with Cuba after a 46-Year Hiatus

Somalia has resumed diplomatic relations with Cuba after a hiatus lasting 46 years.

Juan Manual Rodriguez Vazquez symbolized the renewed diplomatic ties between the two nations when he arrived as Cuba’s non-resident Ambassador to Somalia.

The Cuban diplomat submitted his credentials to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

He joined his colleagues from Djibouti and Canada in presenting credentials to the President.

Mohamed Ibrahim Youssef and Christopher Thornley are to be the new Djiboutian and Canadian ambassadors to Somalia effective April 4.

Diplomatic ties between Somalia and Cuba broke down in 1977.

At the time, Cuba threw its weight behind Ethiopia in the Somalia-Ethiopia war.
