MOGADISHU — The Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia’s Federal Government, Salah Ahmed Jama, officially presided over a high-level Somalia Humanitarian Forum convened this week by the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA).
Assessing the National Drought Crisis
During the critical gathering, which included senior representatives from various United Nations humanitarian agencies, government disaster management officials presented a comprehensive, data-driven report detailing the severe realities of the nation’s ongoing drought situation.
The strategic meeting follows severe national alerts regarding environmental conditions, closely aligning with SoDMA’s recent urgent calls for national self-reliance and coordinated relief efforts amid critical aid shortfalls.
Government Mitigation Initiatives
Addressing the forum, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama highlighted the federal government’s substantial, ongoing efforts in combating the widespread drought. He noted that multiple domestic relief initiatives have been successfully implemented across vulnerable regions, providing essential support to affected communities despite severe resource constraints.
Looking ahead, the Deputy Prime Minister assured the attendees that additional structural measures will be rapidly expedited to mitigate the impact of the current crisis and build long-term resilience to prevent future drought occurrences. He confirmed that several strategic infrastructure and climate-adaptation plans are currently underway to safeguard the nation’s agricultural and pastoral sectors.
