PRETORIA — The Somali diplomatic mission in South Africa hosted a high-level visit on Tuesday from South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Social Development, Hon. Ganief Hendricks.
Ambassador Mohamed Sheikh Isxaq welcomed the Deputy Minister to the embassy premises for a courtesy call aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties between Somalia and South Africa.
Addressing Diaspora Challenges
While the talks explored areas of mutual benefit, significant attention was paid to the challenges encountered by Somali nationals residing in South Africa. Ambassador Isxaq highlighted specific concerns regarding security, business operations, and the safeguarding of personal assets.
The Ambassador also raised issues related to legal affairs, particularly concerning new regulations and the recently Cabinet-endorsed White Paper on Citizenship, Immigration and Refugee Protection. Both officials agreed that these community concerns require practical and effective solutions.
Acknowledging Contributions
In turn, Deputy Minister Hendricks acknowledged the successful integration of the Somali community into South African society. He noted their exceptional contributions in both business and social spheres relative to other migrant groups.
Ambassador Isxaq characterized the visit as a constructive advancement toward enhanced bilateral cooperation and mutual comprehension between the two governments.
