Somalia Secures €10.5M EU Budget Support for Public Services and Education

Mogadishu — Somalia’s Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh announced on Wednesday that the European Union has committed €10.5 million in budget support to bolster the nation’s public services and education sector. The financial package follows a high-level meeting between Egeh and senior EU officials in Mogadishu, aimed at deepening Somalia’s partnership with the European Union.

The new funds will directly contribute to key programs designed to enhance public service delivery, improve education access, and support long-term institutional reform in Somalia. Egeh expressed his appreciation for the continued support, calling it “a vital step toward stabilizing Somalia’s economy and investing in its human capital.”

EU representatives underlined their commitment to Somalia’s development, noting that transparent financial management and sustained reforms were pivotal in unlocking this vital funding. The grant is part of a broader European strategy to support Somalia’s recovery, address structural challenges, and bolster its resilience against future shocks.

Analysts view this as a significant endorsement of Somalia’s economic policy trajectory. By prioritizing education and public services, the government aims to boost literacy rates, skill development, and public-sector capacity — investments that could improve employment prospects for youth and reduce poverty.

As Somalia strives to consolidate peace and economic growth, partnerships with international actors like the EU offer a crucial avenue for long-term progress. Observers note that ensuring transparent utilization of these funds will be key to maintaining momentum and unlocking further international assistance in the years to come.
