OIC Condemns Israeli Recognition of Somaliland and Calls for Gaza Ceasefire

JEDDAH – The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened an extraordinary session today, January 10, 2026, to address what it described as a dangerous escalation in regional stability. Meeting at the General Secretariat headquarters, the Council focused primarily on recent developments in the Horn of Africa and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine.

Direct Challenge to Somali Sovereignty

The 22nd extraordinary session was triggered by Israel’s recent announcement recognizing the “Somaliland” region as an independent state. Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha addressed the assembly, labeling the move a “flagrant violation of international law” and a “dangerous precedent”. He emphasized that such recognition poses a direct threat to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General stressed that the timing of this meeting was critical, given the sensitive nature of the developments affecting regional security. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to the OIC Charter and United Nations resolutions, calling for a unified Islamic position to uphold the borders of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Demand for Gaza Withdrawal and Reconstruction

Beyond the situation in Somalia, the Council focused heavily on the continued aggression in the Palestinian territories. Secretary-General Taha urged the international community to compel Israel to transition to the second phase of a ceasefire agreement. This phase, according to the Council, must lead to a comprehensive and permanent cessation of hostilities and the complete withdrawal of forces from the Gaza Strip.

The OIC outlined a clear humanitarian mandate, demanding the opening of all border crossings to facilitate the unimpeded delivery of aid. The Council also expressed its firm opposition to the displacement of the Palestinian people and announced plans for an international conference in Cairo dedicated to the reconstruction of Gaza.

Formal Resolutions Adopted

The session concluded with the formal adoption of two major resolutions. The first resolution focuses on protecting the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia against external interference and unilateral recognition of its regions. The second resolution addresses the ongoing Israeli aggression, specifically condemning plans for the annexation of Palestinian land and the displacement of its inhabitants. These resolutions reflect a collective stance among Member States to prioritize regional stability and international law in both East Africa and the Middle East.
