Somalia Sends Elite Soldiers to Turkey for Advanced Training

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) sent a battalion of elite soldiers off to Turkey for advanced training.

More than 150 of Somalia’s elite forces are in Turkey for a series of training designed to equip them with better skills.

The decision is part of the East African country’s plan to retrain up to 30 percent of the members of its armed forces.

Turkey’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that Somalia soldiers have reported to an anti-terrorism training facility located in the southwestern city of Isparta.

The Somali soldiers are scheduled to receive commando training at the facility.

According to the Turkish defense ministry, the Somali soldiers started receiving the training on December 21, 2020.

In the past, Mehmet Yilmaz, the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, confirmed that his government was prepared to train up to a third of the 16,000 soldiers in Somalia.
