Somalia Signs an Accord with United Nations to Improve Education and Preserve Culture

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has signed an accord with the United Nations for the improvement of education and preservation of culture in the country.

Abdullahi Godah Barre, the country’s Minister for Education, Culture and Higher Education represented the government.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General, signed the accord on behalf of the United Nations. The signing ceremony took place in Mogadishu.

DG Azoulay’s trip to Mogadishu was the first by the head of UNESCO in the Horn of Africa nation.

Azoulay said, “Signing the accord offers further proof of the importance of culture and education to the future of the country.”

She said that the accord is one effort by Somalia and UN to rebuild the country, which has suffered decades of armed conflicts and political insecurity.

On his part, Barre highlighted the long history of partnership between Somalia and UNESCO. He said the newly signed accord is a huge boost to education and culture in the nation.
