MOGADISHU, Somalia – Security forces in Somalia eliminated a top Al-Shabaab commander as the campaign against the group reaches a pivotal stage, backed comprehensively by international partners including the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Special Forces executed an overnight raid in Lower Shabelle, taking out a high-level commander responsible for bombings throughout the region. He was also charged with fueling instability across the Horn of Africa.
Hassan Siidow Hussein acted as the coordinator for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) aimed at civilians and security personnel. His efforts also hampered transportation nationwide.
After prolonged surveillance, officials tracked Hassan and eliminated him along with three armed escorts in the Cumar Beere area. His death represents a key breakthrough in the battle against Al-Shabaab militants.
The Somali National Army (SNA), supported by the AFRICOM and the AUSSOM, has confronted the Al-Shabaab group over the past two decades.
Nevertheless, the group’s guerrilla methods have rendered it nearly impossible to eradicate, with robust presence in central and southern Somalia. Recent operations have restricted their operations to limited areas.
The SNA has faced criticism for inadequate efforts against the militants, leaning heavily on foreign troops whose mandates are nearing expiration. The government stays confident in the prospects of vanquishing the group.
