Somalia’s Ministry of Education has promised to award secondary school certificates to students who sat the recent examinations in Puntland.
Initially, a directive from the Federal Government of Somalia’s education ministry had ruled out awarding high school leavers the certificates.
However, on Monday, December 14, a joint statement from Puntland and Mogadishu stated that the students are now in line for the national certificates.
The statement clarified that Mogadishu and Garowe had agreed to bury their differences on this issue.
Consequently, secondary school leavers from Puntland are now free to collect their certificates at either Garowe or from the Federal Ministry of Education headquarters in Mogadishu.
Several months ago, Puntland officials prevented their students from sitting the national examinations while Dr. Abdullahi Godah Barre was the education minister.
At the time, Dr. Barre categorically stated that the ministry would not issue certificates to students who never sat for the national exams.
