Somalia to Hold Direct Elections in 2026

Somalia is ready to hold direct or universal elections in 2026.

The East African nation, which held presidential and parliamentary elections in 2022 and 2021 respectively, will elect its new set of leaders in 2026.

In the last polls, the country failed to carry out the much-anticipated one-person-one-vote (1P1V) elections.

Instead, it opted for indirect polls through delegates.

A technical advisory committee has already started meeting under the guidance of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to achieve this goal.

With the exception of Puntland, all Federal Member States (FMS) are members of the technical advisory committee.

Somali leaders will hold a National Consultative Council (NCC) in February in Mogadishu.

During the meeting, they are expected to discuss the preliminary findings of the technical advisory committee.
