Somalia to Improve Protection for Marine Life and Environment

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has vowed to improve protection of the country’s marine life and environment.

FGS made this commitment during a recent workshop on fisheries held with the collaboration of the Federal Member States (FMS).

Sabir Shurie, the Minister of Ports and Fisheries, was the Chief Guest during the recent two-day Fisheries Consultative Conference, which took place in Mogadishu.

The Fisheries Consultative Conference kicked off on Saturday, December 12.

It was held to discuss several issues affecting the fisheries sector.

Furthermore, stakeholders and the participants at the conference used the opportunity to review Somali Fisheries Law.

Representatives from the regional governments agreed to team up with FGS to protect the country’s marine life and environment.

They also pledged to prevent illegal fishing off the Somali coast.

The Ministry of Ports and Fisheries promised to work closely with other stakeholders to unify Somalia’s fisheries policies.

A similar Fisheries Consultative Conference is scheduled for Dhusamareb, the administrative capital of Galmudug State, soon.
