Somalia’s Electoral Commission Extends Political Associations Registration Deadline

Mogadishu, Somalia – The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has announced an extension of the registration period for political associations, granting stakeholders until September 6, 2025 to complete the process.

In a statement released on Saturday, the commission said the decision followed consultations with various stakeholders who requested additional time to meet the legal and administrative requirements for registration. The extension is aimed at ensuring inclusivity, fairness, and broader participation in the country’s evolving political landscape.

“The commission recognizes the logistical and compliance challenges faced by some associations. By extending the deadline, we seek to provide a fair opportunity for all groups to formalize their status within the legal framework,” the NIEBC noted.

The registration of political associations is a critical step in shaping the pre-election environment, as these groups often serve as foundations for emerging parties and platforms for citizen engagement. Observers say the move could encourage more grassroots organizations to seek formal recognition, strengthening pluralism in the run-up to future elections.

Political analysts welcomed the decision, describing it as a pragmatic response to realities on the ground.

“This extension allows associations that were at risk of exclusion to catch up and participate fully in the democratic process,” said Dr. Amina Khalif, a governance expert based in Mogadishu.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency and adhering to constitutional guidelines as it prepares the country for upcoming electoral milestones. It also urged political associations to use the extension effectively and avoid last-minute rushes that could compromise compliance.

With the new deadline now set, associations that fail to register by September 6, 2025, risk being disqualified from engaging in official political activities, including contesting future elections or forming alliances.
