Somalia, Türkiye Deepen Trade Ties in High-Level Mogadishu Talks

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia and Türkiye have taken fresh steps toward expanding their economic partnership following talks between Somali Minister of Commerce and Industry Mohamoud Adan Geesood and Turkish Ambassador to Mogadishu Alper Aktaş.

According to a statement from the Turkish Embassy in Somalia, the meeting — held in the capital on Monday — centered on ways to strengthen bilateral trade relations and accelerate ongoing economic cooperation between the two nations.

Geesood and Amb. Aktaş reportedly discussed increasing Turkish investment in Somalia’s manufacturing, construction, and import-export sectors. They also explored opportunities to support Somali entrepreneurs seeking access to Turkish markets, as well as expanding trade delegations and business forums to connect private sector stakeholders from both countries.

Türkiye has emerged as one of Somalia’s closest economic partners over the past decade, with Turkish companies heavily involved in infrastructure, aviation, and port management. The meeting signals a shared intention to move beyond aid-based cooperation toward more sustainable trade-driven growth.

Neither side disclosed specific agreements reached during the talks, but officials described the exchange as “constructive and forward-looking,” hinting at further engagements in the coming months.

The renewed momentum comes at a time when Somalia is actively seeking foreign investors to boost its industrial output and reduce dependency on imports. Türkiye, with its growing footprint in East Africa, appears poised to play an increasingly central role in that transformation.
