U.S. Strengthens Support for Somalia Amid Intensifying Drought Emergency

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner, Mohamud Moallim, convened with U.S. Ambassador Richard H. Riley IV at the American Embassy in Mogadishu to reinforce humanitarian cooperation between the two nations.

The talks centered on the urgent necessity to tackle persistent climate challenges facing Somalia. Amb. Riley confirmed that America would maintain close collaboration with SoDMA to help populations grappling with extensive drought conditions throughout Somalia.

The envoy emphasized that aiding at-risk communities continues to be a primary objective for the US’s diplomatic presence in Somalia.

America serves as Somalia’s principal benefactor in humanitarian assistance. In the last 10 years, American authorities have furnished over USD 7 billion in humanitarian and developmental contributions.

This alliance proved pivotal during the 2022 drought, when the United States allocated $1.3 billion in crisis funding with more than $700 million in direct humanitarian aid, which was instrumental in averting famine and providing critical life-saving interventions.

In addition to direct assistance, the U.S. diplomatic mission has persistently championed Somalia’s cause during emergencies, facilitating wider international backing.

The event concluded with a joint pledge to cooperation, extending beyond immediate relief efforts to concentrate on establishing sustained resilience for communities vulnerable to weather-related calamities.

SoDMA conveyed profound appreciation for the enduring generosity of the United States, highlighting that this collaboration is vital for safeguarding and rehabilitating the Somali population.
