MOGADISHU – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Moalim, held a high-level meeting on Monday with the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Georg Conway, to coordinate national and international preparedness efforts ahead of the Deyr rainy season.
The discussions in Mogadishu centered on strengthening early warning systems, improving emergency response mechanisms, and mobilizing humanitarian resources to mitigate the risk of drought and flooding during the coming months. Both sides underscored the urgency of proactive planning as weather forecasts indicate potential climate shocks that could impact millions across Somalia.
Commissioner Moalim reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing coordination with international partners to ensure timely delivery of life-saving assistance to vulnerable communities. He emphasized that “preparedness is the best defense against crisis,” adding that SoDMA has been working closely with local authorities to monitor rainfall patterns and pre-position relief supplies in high-risk areas.
UN Coordinator Conway praised Somalia’s growing leadership in disaster risk management and pledged continued UN support for capacity building, early recovery, and resilience programming. He noted that joint planning is essential to protect livelihoods and prevent a repeat of previous humanitarian emergencies triggered by erratic weather conditions.
The meeting comes as Somalia braces for the Deyr rains (October–December), a critical period for agriculture and water resources. However, heavy or delayed rainfall could exacerbate humanitarian challenges for communities already affected by drought, displacement, and food insecurity.
Both SoDMA and the UN reaffirmed their shared goal of shifting from crisis response to long-term resilience — ensuring that Somali communities are better equipped to withstand and recover from future climate shocks.
