Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has taken another significant step toward strengthening national security and arms control with the validation of the National Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) Strategy 2025–2030.
The meeting, chaired by National Security Advisor Aweys Haji and organized by the Office of National Security, brought together senior government officials, including the Director General of Defense at the Ministry of Defense, Abdulkadir Abukar Mohamed, along with representatives from security institutions and international partners.
The new five-year strategy aims to build strong institutional frameworks and governance systems to ensure that weapons and ammunition are managed responsibly and safely across the country. It places particular emphasis on improving the capacity of defense institutions to monitor, store, and transport arms securely—an essential measure in reducing the risks of diversion and misuse.
Abdulkadir underscored that the strategy also introduces robust mechanisms to prevent the spread of illicit firearms, reinforcing Somalia’s ongoing commitment to combat terrorism and promote stability. By enhancing transparency and accountability in weapons management, the plan aligns with broader national and international efforts to strengthen peace and security.
Once finalized, the Ministry of Defense is expected to present the strategy to the Council of Ministers for formal approval and rollout. The adoption of this framework marks a crucial step toward building a safer, more secure Somalia—one where responsible arms governance supports the country’s long-term recovery and state-building goals.
