Somalia has called upon the United Nations to help protect its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
This emerged following a meeting between Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Barre and Guterres met in New York on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA79) on Friday.
They both agreed that strengthening the UN-Somalia partnership, especially as Somalia prepares for its tenure on the UN Security Council, is crucial for advancing national interests and securing international support.
Discussing the protection of Somalia’s sovereignty and unity with the backing of the UN underscores the importance of global solidarity in facing challenges like terrorism and instability.
The UN Secretary-General’s support for the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) transition and efforts to secure funding for the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) reflect the ongoing need for international collaboration in Somalia’s security and development journey.
