MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia has commenced a high-level technical workshop to enhance the nation’s capacity to obtain international climate financing.
The four-day event, which began on Monday in Mogadishu, centers on the programming framework of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the validation of key national strategies.
Focus on Financial Readiness
The workshop was officially launched by Liban Absiye, Executive Director of the National Climate Fund (NCF). He highlighted the significance of financial readiness in tackling environmental challenges, such as persistent droughts and floods.
“Enhancing financial preparedness is vital for Somalia as it deals with… environmental deterioration,” Absiye emphasized.
Strategic Objectives
The main purpose of the gathering is to validate two crucial documents:
-
Readiness Needs Assessment (RNA)
-
Private Sector Engagement Strategy (PSES)
These frameworks aim to align Somalia’s national priorities with global climate funding mechanisms, ensuring the country is well-positioned to secure necessary resources.
Partnerships and Participation
Organized by the National Designated Authority (NDA) for Somalia, the workshop operates under the AU-AIP Multicountry Readiness Programme in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA).
A diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from government agencies, financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society, are attending the sessions from February 9 to 12.
