The Attorney General of Somalia has appointed a Special Prosecutor to investigate crimes committed against journalists in the country.
A letter from the Office of the Attorney General to this effect dated September 8, 2020 specified that the Special Prosecutor would investigate the killing of journalists in Somalia.
The decision to launch investigations into crimes against journalists is appropriate in a country ranked one of the world’s most dangerous places for reporters.
Journalists and media organizations in the Horn of Africa nation look forward to positive results from the Special Prosecutor’s office.
Most importantly, they hope that the move could be the first step towards ending impunity by authorities in the country against journalists.
