Somalia’s All-Women Newsroom Offers $1,000 Grants to Female Journalists

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s pioneering all-women newsroom, Bilan Media, has announced a $1,000 storytelling grant for female journalists aiming to shed light on critical and often taboo issues facing Somali society, including gender-based violence, poverty, and social injustice.

The initiative, hosted by Dalsan Media Group and funded by the European Union (EU) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), seeks to amplify the voices of women journalists and support powerful, underreported stories that challenge societal norms.

Applications are open to all female journalists in Somalia, regardless of affiliation, and entries must be sent via email to bilan@bilan.media by the deadline of August 6, 2025.

“This grant is about giving Somali women journalists the platform and resources to tell stories that matter—stories that are often ignored or suppressed. We are proud to support fearless reporting that can drive social change,” said the organisation in its statement.

Founded in 2022, Bilan Media is Somalia’s first all-women newsroom and has gained local and international recognition for its bold journalism and commitment to gender equality in the media industry. Its team of dedicated reporters regularly investigates issues such as domestic abuse, forced marriage, education access, and women’s economic empowerment—topics rarely covered in mainstream Somali media.

The grant opportunity reflects a growing effort by international partners to promote freedom of expression, women’s empowerment, and responsible journalism in fragile and conflict-affected environments like Somalia.

Successful applicants will receive editorial and logistical support from Bilan Media and will have their work published across Somali and international platforms, helping to elevate the visibility of female-led journalism.

For more information and to apply, journalists are encouraged to contact bilan@bilan.media before the August 6 deadline.
